My Styling Gig at the Mark’s Fall Retail Preview

A cute look from Mark’s fall 2011 collection.

Now that Fall is in full spring, let’s take a minute to check out the totally wearable looks on offer at Mark’s this season!

This summer, I got to attend the Mark’s fall preview for ELLE Canada! The Toronto fashion team gets invited to a lot of previews. Because of their daily editorial schedule, they’re not able to attend all of them, so it was fun when we interns got the chance to attend on their behalf.

Retail previews give fashion editors a sneak peek at the store’s upcoming collections, and also help them decide what they might want to feature in the magazine. A monthly magazine like ELLE Canada works three months in advance, so the editors are always thinking ahead.

This event was extra special: not only would I have the chance to check out the store’s fall collection, I would also have the opportunity to style two outfits using clothes from the Mark’s fall line!

With so many lines and brands to choose from nowadays, PR companies are always trying to come up with new ways to catch the eye of a fashion editor. So it’s no surprise when a retail preview offers something unique—like this one, a styling challenge!

When I arrived at the Spoke Club, a members-only venue, I sampled coffee and fresh fruit (yum, mango!), before settling in for a short PowerPoint presentation on the fall women’s and men’s collections.

Then, all of the guests at the event were invited to browse the racks and put together complete outfits on a model. Being able to touch and play with the clothes—and see them on real live people—gave us a good idea of the fit and quality, and also helped us easily remember what was on offer.

Shoes, pants, tops, sweaters, jackets, and accessories were at our full disposal. Everything was fair game.

Check out the two outfits I put together using my favourite pieces from the fall line!
